Question Response Comments/Notes
1. Which current Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court best reflects your judicial philosophy? Alito* My work as a state judge involves the NC Constitution and NC law. Thus, my top judicial “hero” is Judge Samuel Ashe of the NC Supreme Court who, in Bayard v. Singleton (1787) first exercised the power of judicial review to protect North Carolina’s constitutional right of jury trial - 16 years before the U.S. Supreme Court in Marbury v. Madison.
2. Rate your judicial philosophy toward the Constitution on a scale of 1-10 with a “living document” approach being a 1 and an “originalism” approach being a 10. 10* My work involves the Constitution of North Carolina which, if you consult Article I, Section 35 of the Declaration of Rights (“A frequent recurrence to fundamental principles is absolutely necessary to preserve the blessings of liberty.”) is a direct instruction to any judge (and citizen) to follow the intent of our 1776 state constitutional founders.
3. Please list the organizations with which you have been involved over the past five years through membership, religious affiliation, pro-bono legal work, or volunteer service. W* NC Bar Association, NC Administrative Law Section, NC Judicial Independence Committee, NC High School Mock Trial. I also teach safe driving practices to young people through various organizations as I am an amateur motorsports competition driver.
4. In the space below, please describe your overall judicial philosophy. W* My campaign says: “A Fair Judge. For Everyone.” This means exactly what it says. Equally important is getting the law right - I’ve been reviewed on appeal ten times by the NC Court of Appeals and once by the NC Supreme Court in six years as an administrative law judge, and I’ve never been reversed.
5. In the space below, please describe the role faith plays in your daily life. W* It’s critical, simply put.
