| 1. Which current Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court best reflects your judicial philosophy? | Thomas* | I am a textualist and believe that words have meaning. As a graduate from Regent University School of Law, Justice Thomas would come down and give speeches about his judicial philosophy. I was training under his philosophy in my constitutional law class and fully subscribe to his interpretation of the law and Constitution as a strict constructionist. |
| 2. Rate your judicial philosophy toward the Constitution on a scale of 1-10 with a “living document” approach being a 1 and an “originalism” approach being a 10. | 10* | As a judge, I understand my role is to interpret the laws, not make the law. Our legislature is tasked with making the law and therefore the Constitution should be respected in its original text. |
| 3. Please list the organizations with which you have been involved over the past five years through membership, religious affiliation, pro-bono legal work, or volunteer service. | W* | I am currently a member of Current Church, a non-denominational church in Mooresville, NC. Previously, I was at Grace Covenant Church in Cornelius, NC, where I served on the Executive Board before getting on the bench. I have volunteered as a Sunday School teacher, K-2nd, for over 10 years. I am a volunteer wrestling coach at Ambassador Chirstian Academy. And I am a volunteer substitute teacher at Liberty Preparatory Christian Academy. |
| 4. In the space below, please describe your overall judicial philosophy. | W* | My judicial philosophy is very simple: judges must be fair and impartial and not have any favoritism. Judges must also make tough decisions and violent repeat criminal offenders should be held accountable for their crimes to make sure that our community and public is safe. As a Superior Court Judge, I hear very disturbing cases like first degree murder, sex offenses, and habitual felon. I must be tough, but fair. |
| 5. In the space below, please describe the role faith plays in your daily life. | W* | As a Christian, I pray Ephesians 6 over myself before I get into the courtroom and commonly pray for wisdom throughout my day seeking godly counsel in making life altering decisions. I realize that we live in a spiritual world and there is good and evil. Every decision that I make is through a Christian worldview. I honor life, families, and the rights of parents to make decisions on behalf of their children. I believe that every person is made in the image of God and therefore I treat all persons with respect. Even if I do not agree with a person, I give them the opportunity to be heard. Since Christ extended mercy and love to me, I extend the same mercy and love to those who are before me. I am honored to be a Superior Court Judge and thank the Lord every day for the ability to be used as an instrument for His glory. |
