Question Response Comments/Notes
1. Should Congress pass legislation that expressly prohibits the distribution of abortion inducing drugs across state lines? N* I think this is avoiding the question rather than resolving it. If an unborn child has rights that supersede the rights of the mother, then inducing an abortion should be a crime, regardless of the method. For now, abortion is not a federal crime, so it would be hard to argue that distributing abortion pills should be a federal crime.
2. Should Congress pass legislation to ban sports gambling across the United States? N* I think adults should be responsible for their own actions as long as they don't violate the rights of others. Gambling is a personal choice. Whether I agree with it or not, I don't believe in a nanny state that protects people from themselves.
3. Should North Carolina voters be required to show a photo ID in order to vote in North Carolina? −
4. Should Congress pass legislation that would protect citizens from being charged with discrimination because of their sincerely held religious beliefs about marriage? Y* As a general principle, I do not believe in discrimination laws against private citizens acting in a private business. Interference in a federally protected activity should be illegal. But a private business should be free to act on its own principles without government interference.
5. Should Congress legalize the use of marijuana for medical purposes? Y* Again, I believe all adults should be free to act according to their own values as long as they don't harm others. Whether I agree with it or not, a person's choice to use marijuana (for medical purposes or otherwise), is not something that should be interfered with by the government.
6. Should Congress pass legislation that prohibits biological males who identify as female from participating on female sports teams? Y* There is a clear advantage for biological males so this is unfair to biological females. I would pass a legislation prohibiting such participation but only in government institutions. If a private organization chooses to allow it, that should not be within the purview of Congress.
7. Should Congress continue to provide funding for abstinence-until-marriage sexual education programs? N* I don't think the federal government should be involved in the states' educational curriculum.
8. Should organizations that provide abortions be allowed to receive federal taxpayer dollars? N* Requiring tax payers who may themselves believe abortion is immoral to nonetheless pay for women to have abortions is particularly unfair.
9. Should Congress pass legislation requiring a health care practitioner, who is present at the time a child is born alive after a failed abortion attempt, to exercise the same degree of skill, care, and diligence to preserve the life and health of the child as would be expected for any other child born alive at the same gestational age? Y* A child's rights do not depend on the actions of the mother. Either they have rights or they don't. Since society had decided that at a certain stage of development a child does have rights, those rights should apply whether the child is alive because of a failed abortion attempt or an intentional birth.
10. Should Congress prohibit "gender transition procedures" on minors, including the administration of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones and the performance of "gender reassignment surgery?" Y* Since minors are too young to make such a life changing decision, they should wait until they are more aware of the consequences, then they should be free to decide for themselves.
11. Should a person’s religious beliefs influence the decisions they make while serving in public office? Y* The Constitution should supersede all else. But, each public official should use their own moral compass to choose what issues to prioritize and what side to take on controversial issues. In the end, if the law contradicts their religious views, their only recourse is to either try to change the law or leave office.
12. Should churches and other qualified religious organizations continue to receive tax-exempt status? Y* Yes, but I would require them to provide public services, such as feeding the hungry, in exchange for their tax exempt status.
13. Should the number of terms an individual may serve in the U.S. Senate or U.S. House be limited? N* Term limits is just a shortcut. Certainly it will eliminate members of Congress that we may not like, but it will also eliminate members we do like. The answer to getting corruption out of Congress is to have a more educated voter rather than to remove members from Congress, regardless of their abilities and integrity.
14. Should the U.S. Constitution be amended to require Congress to balance the federal budget every year? Y* Absolutely. We are $38 trillion in debt. We simply can't afford our current budget. Deficit spending allows for irresponsible governing. Only a balanced budget amendment would force the government to make the hard decisions it needs to make.
