Question Response Comments/Notes
1. Should North Carolina parents who choose to educate their children in a non-public school be eligible to receive a state-funded scholarship grant to assist with the cost of tuition and fees? Y* Yes. Parents should have access to state-funded scholarship grants because education funding should follow the student, not be limited by the type of school they attend. Families should have the freedom to choose the educational option that best meets their child’s needs.
2. Should the N.C. General Assembly authorize non-tribal commercial gambling casinos in North Carolina? Y* Yes. Adults should have the freedom to spend their own money how they choose. The government should not prohibit legal activities simply because some people disapprove of them.
3. Should abortion be prohibited in North Carolina once a fetal heartbeat is detected? N
4. Should North Carolina voters be required to show a photo ID in order to vote in North Carolina? Y
5. Should the N.C. General Assembly legalize the use of marijuana for medical purposes? Y* Yes. North Carolina should legalize medical and recreational marijuana. For medical use, patients should be able to access treatments that may help their conditions in consultation with their healthcare providers. I also support allowing further research and access to emerging therapies such as psilocybin and MDMA-assisted treatments, especially for conditions like PTSD. Patients and medical professionals, not government bureaucracy, should have a greater role in determining appropriate treatment options. For recreational use, responsible adults should have the freedom to make their own choices. The state should keep government involvement limited rather than creating unnecessary barriers and taxes that drive people toward an unregulated black market.
6. Should state nondiscrimination laws include "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" as protected classifications? Y* I believe the state should not discriminate against individuals based on sexual orientation or gender identity, especially in state employment and government services. Government should treat all citizens equally and ensure that hiring and employment decisions are based on qualifications, performance, and ability, not personal characteristics. For private businesses, I believe in protecting individual liberty and allowing business owners the freedom to establish their own policies, while recognizing that customers and the marketplace ultimately hold businesses accountable for their decisions. Government’s role should be to protect equal treatment by the state while avoiding unnecessary interference in private relationships and business decisions.
7. Should biological male students who identify as female be allowed to participate on female sports teams? N* Biological males should not participate in female sports because it can create unfair competitive advantages and undermine opportunities for female athletes. However, any state laws or regulations should be limited to areas directly controlled by the state, such as government-funded public school athletics. The government should not dictate how private leagues, organizations, or schools operate their own programs. Private organizations should have the freedom to establish their own policies, while families and participants can decide which programs best align with their values and needs.
8. Should organizations that provide abortions be allowed to receive state funds? N* While I support a woman’s right to make her own personal decisions, taxpayers should not be forced to fund organizations that provide abortions. Individuals and private organizations should be free to make their own choices, but government funding should not require citizens to financially support services that conflict with their personal beliefs.
9. Should North Carolina law allow a medical professional to assist another person in ending their life? Y* I believe in bodily autonomy, which includes the right of individuals to make deeply personal decisions about their own lives. However, any law allowing medical professionals to assist someone in ending their life must include strong protections to prevent coercion, abuse, or decisions being influenced by financial pressures, healthcare costs, or a person being viewed as less valuable because of their age, disability, or health condition. The focus must remain on individual choice, informed consent, and safeguards that protect vulnerable people while respecting personal liberty.
10. Should a health care practitioner, who is present at the time a child is born alive after a failed abortion attempt, be required by state law to exercise the same degree of skill, care, and diligence to preserve the life and health of that child as would be expected for any other child born alive at the same gestational age? Y
11. Should North Carolina public schools be required to allow students to voluntarily participate in “released time” religious instruction during school hours—provided that it takes place off-campus, with parental consent, and at no cost to the public school unit? N* No, public schools should not be required to provide released-time religious instruction. However, if a school district or individual school chooses to allow it under appropriate guidelines, with parental consent, off-campus instruction, and no cost to taxpayers, that decision should be respected. Parents should have the freedom to choose an educational environment that aligns with their family’s values. This is why school choice is so important. Families should be able to select schools and programs that best meet their children’s academic, cultural, and religious needs, rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all system.
12. Should N.C. law (G.S. §90-21.5) continue to allow minors to consent to the treatment of venereal disease or other reportable communicable diseases, pregnancy (not including abortion), abuse of controlled substances or alcohol, and emotional disturbance, without parental consent? U
13. Should churches and other qualified religious organizations continue to receive tax-exempt status? Y
14. Should a person’s religious beliefs influence the decisions they make while serving in public office? -
15. Should the number of terms a state legislator may serve in the North Carolina General Assembly be limited? U
