Question Response Comments/Notes
1. Should North Carolina parents who choose to educate their children in a non-public school be eligible to receive a state-funded scholarship grant to assist with the cost of tuition and fees? Y* Funding for this end ought to be returned to the early-2023 yearly plan and, in place of the difference in funding, ought to be tax cuts that people can put towards funding non-public schooling if they please, through voluntary communal effort if necessary.
2. Should the N.C. General Assembly authorize non-tribal commercial gambling casinos in North Carolina? Y* This will increase gambling addiction ever-so-slightly in the short term, but what monopoly casino businesses do not want you to know is that competition would actually improve gambling to be more consumer-friendly and therefore less dangerous, instead innovative. Gambling teaches people the hard way that irresponsibility has consequences. It produces horror stories, which then turn into a widespread culture of voluntarily choosing to stay away from gambling, as opposed to the begrudging, tantalizing desire to gamble that comes from making it legally taboo. If you don't believe me, try to create a country-wide prohibition of alcohol and see if that produces a pious, Christian country. Shout out to the Catawba Tribe who gave a maximum donation of nearly 7000 dollars to my Democrat opponent because Libertarians scare the bejeebus out of them. Without a lucrative monopoly on gambling, they would have to go be productive members of society, and they loathe that idea.
3. Should abortion be prohibited in North Carolina once a fetal heartbeat is detected? N* The humane answer is banning it just before signs of sentience, after week 16, which is the right balance of respect to the freedom of the mother as well as the sanctity of (meaningful) life. I would not offer an exception for incest, but I would offer an exception for rape due to the psychological damage a woman is forced to go through (potentially) otherwise and for how it de-incentivizes rape, much like when a married woman takes the last name of her husband. If you think about it, this balances out to be similar to the status quo and aligns with the view of the average American according to polling, which is purely coincidental.
4. Should North Carolina voters be required to show a photo ID in order to vote in North Carolina? Y
5. Should the N.C. General Assembly legalize the use of marijuana for medical purposes? Y* Much like gambling, something being less than pure good does not mean it ought to be made illegal in all cases for everyone. Even if you kept it illegal, the war on drugs is effectively lost badly by the use of force to tell people what they can and cannot do. We Christians have to avoid the trap of behaving as if we are correct about everything when, from an outsider's perspective, some things look truly ambiguous and rather harmless or even greatly beneficial.
6. Should state nondiscrimination laws include "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" as protected classifications? N* There is a time and place for discrimination of many kinds, especially of outcomes that are malleable and not acquired at birth. Should obese people be a protected class?
7. Should biological male students who identify as female be allowed to participate on female sports teams? N* However, in informal, small clubs, there is no need to legally ban participation, as they can work that out amongst themselves on so small a scale. More than likely, they will discover why the ban is popular in the first place and can simply walk away from the team to boycott.
8. Should organizations that provide abortions be allowed to receive state funds? N
9. Should North Carolina law allow a medical professional to assist another person in ending their life? U
10. Should a health care practitioner, who is present at the time a child is born alive after a failed abortion attempt, be required by state law to exercise the same degree of skill, care, and diligence to preserve the life and health of that child as would be expected for any other child born alive at the same gestational age? Y
11. Should North Carolina public schools be required to allow students to voluntarily participate in “released time” religious instruction during school hours—provided that it takes place off-campus, with parental consent, and at no cost to the public school unit? N* I believe North Carolina public schools ought to be decentralized rather than one-size-fits-all, so I must vote no in accordance with my anti-fascism view, even though that sounds like a good idea.
12. Should N.C. law (G.S. §90-21.5) continue to allow minors to consent to the treatment of venereal disease or other reportable communicable diseases, pregnancy (not including abortion), abuse of controlled substances or alcohol, and emotional disturbance, without parental consent? N
13. Should churches and other qualified religious organizations continue to receive tax-exempt status? Y* So should all nonprofits, provided they meet a baseline standard first.
14. Should a person’s religious beliefs influence the decisions they make while serving in public office? * This cannot and should not be answered with a simple yes or no. There is a meaningful difference between secular philosophical roles for government and personal/ interpersonal behavior standards. The former needs no religion and, in that way, becomes pluralistic and inclusive, while behavior on an individual and human level, even for politicians, must be governed by the wisdom of the superior supernatural and the authority we answer to above us. A no answer denies a person faith, but a yes answer crushes religious freedom.
15. Should the number of terms a state legislator may serve in the North Carolina General Assembly be limited? Y* I prefer loose term limits rather than harsh ones. Additionally, I am beginning to think we need a de facto age limit for the elderly who are not mentally astute enough to be critical thinkers with the necessary sharp wit. Although I am not a fan of equity policy, this would nevertheless be a "fairness" counterbalance to the troubling, intense systemic bias that older adults have in our Democracy.
